Wrigley Field, one of baseball’s most iconic stadiums, has long been a symbol of tradition and pride for Chicago Cubs fans. But lately, it’s been making headlines for a different reason: its efforts to fix accessibility issues.

After a settlement with the Department of Justice (DOJ) in November 2024, the Cubs are tackling ADA issues.

The Accessibility Challenges

The DOJ looked into Wrigley Field and found it wasn’t quite hitting the mark when it came to accessibility. Among the issues were:

  • Not enough wheelchair spaces and companion seating in premium areas.

  • Pathways and bleacher sections that were tough to navigate for fans with mobility challenges.

  • Restrooms, parking areas, and other essential amenities that had barriers.

The Settlement Agreement

So, what’s the plan? The Cubs agreed to a detailed game plan to address these shortcomings. Here’s what they’re doing:

  1. Adding More Accessible Seating: They’re increasing wheelchair and companion seating options in premium areas and the bleachers.

  2. Improving Pathways and Parking: Fans with mobility challenges will have smoother routes from parking areas to their seats.

  3. Updating Restrooms: Restrooms will now meet ADA standards, making them more user-friendly.

  4. Training Staff: Cubs employees will learn how to better assist guests with disabilities.

Addressing accessibility isn’t just about fixing one thing; it’s about improving the whole experience.
